According to ugandaorphans.org, Uganda's population is 34.6 million people, of which 2.5 million are orphans (there are 143 million orphans around the world).  Nearly 50% of their population is under the age of 15 due to the HIV/Aids epidemic (1 in 5 Ugandans are infected), and other diseases such as malaria.  Due to the immense poverty in many areas, much of that 50 percent is uneducated.  Additionally, life expectancy is only 53 years old.

Over 10,000 children have been abducted to become soldiers for the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), a rebel group in Northern Uganda, which Uganda has battled for 17 years (as of 2004).

Uganda is also host to approximately 240,000 refugees from the Congo, Sudan, and Rhwanda.
